Gaming laptops vary in what they prioritize, from raw performance to display quality and portability. PCWorld says it tested each of its four recommendations hands-on, assessing gaming performance alongside usability factors such as keyboard feel, port placement, consistency and screen quality.
The Alienware 16X Aurora is PCWorld’s overall pick. Its Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX processor and RTX 5070 graphics are presented as a strong combination for modern games, including at high settings. The 16-inch, 2560×1600 IPS display runs at 240Hz. PCWorld also highlights its competitive price, while noting that the laptop weighs 5.86 pounds, its keyboard and trackpad could be better, and some hot air exits through the sides. The review reports about seven hours of battery life.
For buyers seeking a lower-cost option, PCWorld recommends the Acer Nitro V 16 AI as its best gaming laptop under $1,000. Its RTX 5050 is suited to 1080p gaming, and its 16-inch 1200p screen has a 180Hz refresh rate. Battery life is listed at eight to 12 hours, depending on use. Trade-offs include entry-level Ryzen 5 240 CPU performance, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, as well as weak built-in speakers and Wi-Fi 6 connectivity.
The Razer Blade 14 (2025) is the selection for portability. At 3.59 pounds, it combines an AMD Ryzen AI 9 365 processor and RTX 5070 graphics with a 14-inch, 2880×1800 OLED display running at 120Hz. PCWorld says it handles modern games at high or ultra settings and remains cool and quiet under load. Its battery lasted just over 11 hours in the review, though the laptop is expensive and larger models can deliver better gaming performance.
For a high-end desktop replacement, PCWorld names the Alienware Area-51. It pairs an Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX with RTX 5080 graphics and a 16-inch 2560×1600 OLED display with a 240Hz refresh rate and G-Sync support. The review praises its processing power, build and physical connectivity, including Thunderbolt 5. Its drawbacks include a weight of more than seven pounds, a small touchpad, limited battery life on the OLED model and a price above $4,000 for the cited configuration.
PCWorld says its laptop reviews use benchmarks to evaluate CPU and GPU performance, battery life and other areas, alongside usability checks. Its buying guide advises shoppers to consider screen type, resolution, refresh rate, size and weight, as well as memory and storage. It notes that 1080p or 1440p can be more practical than 4K for many gamers, and recommends at least 16GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD storage, with 1TB preferred.
