GIMP 3.2.8 is now available as the latest stable release of the open-source image editor. The update includes interface refinements, changes to image loading and font handling, and multiple security fixes.

The color-picking displays have been improved to make smaller color changes easier to see. Updated HEIF loading code also allows GIMP to open larger images in that format. The release adds a GUI testing suite to help detect regressions during development and improves compatibility with AppImage.

Changes to font-loading code allow the process to be cancelled earlier, which is intended to help GIMP shut down faster. The update also adds definitions to the theme file so the application’s appearance is more consistent across platforms.

GIMP says the security fixes follow a large number of reports prompted by recent advances in software scanning and testing tools. The project notes that many reports concern older image plug-ins and legacy filters that may trust image-size information supplied by a file. Deliberately changing that information could cause a plug-in to crash, the announcement says, rather than GIMP itself.
