Thermal imaging cameras can help homeowners spot issues including thermal bridges, drafts, unusual heat around electrical components and problems with heating or ventilation systems. The Topdon TC001 Max is designed as a compact accessory that connects directly to compatible devices over USB-C, avoiding the need for a separate display.

Amazon is currently listing the TC001 Max for $263, compared with its original $320 price. That represents a $57 reduction, or an 18% discount. The camera has a 4.5-star rating from more than 150 reviews, although the review sample is relatively small.

The device combines a 1.5-megapixel visible-light camera with an infrared camera offering 512×384 TISR resolution. Topdon says its image-enhancement technology increases the infrared resolution from 256×192 to 512×384, producing clearer contours and making temperature differences easier to examine.

Users can choose from five viewing modes: thermal image, thermal fusion, contour fusion, visible light and picture-in-picture. These options can help locate heat sources more precisely in areas such as building components, electrical distribution boards, pipework and other equipment.

The TC001 Max operates at 25Hz and has thermal sensitivity of no more than 40 mK NETD. It supports photo and video recording, image rotation, 3D analysis, secondary image evaluation and continuous temperature monitoring through curve graphs. Its 50-degree wide-angle lens can detect temperature differences from up to 5 meters away.

The camera measures temperatures from -4F to 1,022F with an accuracy of ±2%. It also includes 10 color palettes, point, line and area analysis modes, plus customizable temperature thresholds with visual and audible alarms.

The TC001 Max connects through USB-C and is intended to work with compatible iPhones, iPads, Android devices and Windows computers. Topdon states that it does not work with Mac devices. The camera draws power from the connected device, so it does not require a separate battery.

At $263, the TC001 Max remains more expensive than the company’s $200 TC001 base model, but the cheaper version does not include a visible-light camera and does not support iOS. Reviews of the Max model frequently praise its temperature accuracy, sharp thermal images, beginner-friendly operation and usefulness for home improvement, while some users also rate its app positively.
