systemd has merged initial support for Rust, allowing the language to be used in individual binaries that act as leaf components. Shared code in the project must remain in C, so Rust cannot yet be used in systemd’s core components.
In a blog post, systemd lead developers Christian Brauner and Lennart Poettering outlined the approach and its design requirements. These include consistent access to core APIs, uniform behavior and build processes, support for no-std Rust, and keeping Rust optional.
The developers said systemd would like to adopt Rust in core components and is willing to work with the Rust community toward that goal. They pointed to the need for first-class Rust support for shared libraries and for improved ways to interact with the file system primarily through file descriptors.
More details about Rust in systemd are available on the Amutable blog.
