Windows 11 allows users to reposition the taskbar on the left, top, right or bottom of the screen, but the process requires going through the Settings app. Microsoft has confirmed that the absence of drag-and-drop repositioning is intentional rather than an unfinished feature.
To change the taskbar’s location, users must open Settings and go to Personalization, Taskbar, Taskbar behavior and Taskbar position. From there, they can select one of the four available locations.
The approach differs from Windows 10, where users could move the taskbar by dragging it with the mouse. According to Diego Baca, Microsoft’s Vice President of Design, the company chose not to bring that interaction to Windows 11 because dragging the taskbar could lead to accidental movements.
Baca said Microsoft’s research also found that people do not change the taskbar’s position frequently. The company therefore considered a dedicated setting, accessible from the taskbar’s context menu, to be a more predictable and intentional way to manage the layout.
For now, users who want to move the Windows 11 taskbar must use the manual settings process. Microsoft has not indicated that it plans to add mouse-based drag-and-drop repositioning.
